Mimmo Rotella nasce a Catanzaro nel 1918 e muore a Milano l’8 gennaio 2006.
Frequenta l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, diplomatosi si trasferisce a Roma.
Nel 1945 inizia a dipingere e, nel 1951 espone per la prima volta opere astratto-geometriche (influenzato da Mondrian e Kandinskij).
La prima fase della sua attività è caratterizzata dalla sperimentazione di stili pittorici diversi, che lo porterà a rivoluzionare i linguaggi artistici del dopoguerra. In questo periodo si può considerare l’antesignano della corrente neodada in Italia.
Dopo il primo periodo di ricerca astratta, soggiorna negli Stati Uniti e, ritornato a Roma, compone poemi fonetici smettendo di dipingere.
Nel 1953 nascono i primi décollages, tecnica caratterizzata dallo strappo di manifesti pubblicitari affissi nelle strade i cui frammenti sono incollati sulla tela. All’inizio utilizza sia il recto che il verso dei manifesti giocando sui diversi effetti cromatici che questa doppia possibilità gli consente.
Dal 1958 abbandona gradualmente le composizioni puramente astratte per realizzare décollage con immagini chiaramente leggibili. Negli anni successivi perfeziona la sua tecnica, che diventa del collage double décollage, manifesti strappati, incollati su tela e di nuovo strappati. Questa tendenza culmina nella serie Cinecittà e in quella dedicata alle stelle del cinema e a personaggi famosi. Sono degli anni Sessanta e seguenti i lavori dedicati alle affiches del cinema mondiale con i volti dei grandi miti di Hollywood.
Nel 1961 aderisce al gruppo del Nouveau Réalisme di Pierre Restany.
Trasferitosi a Parigi nel 1964 lavora ancora sulla definizione di una nuova tecnica: la Mec Art con cui realizza opere servendosi di procedimenti meccanici su tele emulsionate. Continua la sperimentazione con la serie degli Artypo, prove di stampa tipografiche scelte e incollate liberamente sulla tela.
E’ del 1975 la serie Plastiforme, manifesti strappati posti su supporto di poliuretano con l’intento di conferire loro una dimensione tridimensionale, che espone alla Galleria Plura di Milano, e nello stesso anno pubblica anche il primo disco LP italiano di Poemi Fonetici 1949/75 con presentazione di Alfredo Todisco. Gli anni Settanta sono segnati da frequenti viaggi in USA, India, Nepal, per stabilirsi definitivamente a Milano nel 1980.
Appartengono agli inizi degli anni Ottanta le Coperture (blanks), manifesti pubblicitari ricoperti da fogli che occultano l’immagine sottostante.
Torna alla pittura alla metà del decennio con il ciclo Cinecittà 2 in cui riprende il tema del cinema affrontato in tele di grandi dimensioni e con la serie Sovrapitture su décollage e su lamiera: questi interventi pittorici su manifesti lacerati e incollati su pannelli metallici caratterizzano la stagione più recente dell’artista.
Oltre che alle principali mostre dei Nouveaux Réalistes ed a più di cento esposizioni personali in Italia ed all’estero, l’artista ha partecipato ad importanti rassegne nazionali ed internazionali, a numerose edizioni della Biennale di Venezia e della Quadriennale di Roma.
Nel 1992 riceve da parte del Ministro della Cultura francese, Jack Lang, il titolo di Officiel des arts et des Lettres.
Nel 1996 l’inaugurazione di una sua mostra, primo caso in Italia, viene diffusa on line su Internet.
Nel 1999 il sindaco della sua città natale Sergio Abramo emette un’ordinanza municipale con la quale lo autorizza alla libera defissone di manifesti dal territorio di Catanzaro.
«Strappare manifesti dai muri è la sola compensazione, l’unico modo di protestare contro una società che ha perduto il gusto del cambiamento e delle trasformazioni favolose».

Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro in 1918 and died in Milan on January 8th, 2006.
He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, once graduating he moved to Rome.
In 1945 he began to paint and, in 1951 exhibits for the first time his works-abstract geometric (influenced by Mondrian and Kandinsky).
The first phase of his activity is characterized by experimenting with different painting styles, which will revolutionize the artistic languages of the post-war period. In this period can be considered the precursor of the current neodada in Italy.
After the first period of abstract research whilst living in the United States he returned to Rome, he began to composes phonetic poems and stopped painting.
In 1953 the décollages w as born, a technique characterized by ripping up advertising posters posted on the streets and whose fragments are then pasted on the canvas. At the beginning uses both the front and back of the posters playing on the various colour effects that these two possibilities allows.
From 1958 he gradually abandons the purely abstract compositions to achieve décollage with images clearly legible. In subsequent years he perfects his technique, which become collage double décollage, posters torn, glued on canvas and again torn. This tendency culminates in the series Cinecittà and the ones dedicated to movie stars and celebrities. It was in the sixties that the following work dedicated to affiches of the cinema world with the faces of the great myths of Hollywood.
In 1961 he joins the Group of Nouveau Réalisme of Pierre Restany.
Moved to Paris in 1964 and continues working on defining a new technique: the Mec Art with which he produces works using mechanical procedures on emulsified canvases. Continues experimenting with the series of Artypo, proofs of typographic printing choosen and freely pasted on canvases.
And ‘the 1975 series Plastiforme, posters torn and placed on polyurethane mounts with the intention of giving them a three-dimensional size, which he exhibits at the Gallery Plura of Milan, and in the same year also publishes the first LP disc, Italian Phonetic Poems 1949 / 75 with presentation by Alfredo Todisco. The seventies are marked by frequent travel to the USA, India, Nepal, to settle for ever in Milan in 1980.

Returns to painting the middle of the decade with the cycle Cinecittà 2 in which incorporates the theme of cinema on large canvases and with the series Sovrapitture (over paint) on décollage and sheet of metal: these interventions painting on torn posters and pasted on metal panels characterize the most recent theme of the artist.
In addition to the major exhibitions of Nouveaux Réalistes and more than one hundred personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad, the artist has participated in important national and international exhibitions, numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and the Quadriennale in Rome.
In 1992 received by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, the title of Officiel des arts et des Lettres.

In 1999 the Lord Mayor of his hometown Sergio Abraham issues an municipal order with which authorises the free tearing of posters of the territory of Catanzaro.
